Date: December 3, 2008 7:11:39 PM ESTThere will be a City Council meeting Thursday Dec 4th at 8:30am. Hopefully a resolution will be passed enacting a 6 month moratorium on the closings, and a study group will be formed to see how to best deal with the 11 libraries in question. Please come with signs! Our voices need to be heard in Council. These are our libraries they are talking about. Rm 400, 4th Floor, City Hall.
Then Saturday come to the Rally at Noon at the Central Library, 1901 Vine St. There will be folks meeting at the Kingsessing Library at 11am to go down to the rally together. Come join us!

Delighted to Learn About The Efforts For A Moratorium
I am delighted to learn about the efforts for a moratorium on library shutdowns. It would wonderful if it were successful.
The simple fact is that we are not heading for a depression. Relative to projections, November Pennsylvania state income tax revenues were the best of the current fiscal year, coming up just a little more than $4 million short after four previous months had left the state $68 million short in income tax revenues.
President Bush was far more proactive against a depression than President Hoover was, and President Obama may well prove to more proactive than President Roosevelt. In any case, the United States is now a country with many millions of Americans receiving social security and pension checks, as well as a country in which both spouses frequently work and in which family size is far smaller than it used to be.
We no longer have the situation where a male wage earner commonly had to support a dependent spouse and three to ten children. Nor do we have the situation were less than a third of the people own their own homes, and the overwhelming majority of the people were dropouts at the ninth grade level or below.
The U.S. will survive our current difficulties, and so will the people of Philadelphia. The more we delay the library closings, the more apparent it will be that there is absolutely no need to have them at all.
