Another Major Media Endorsement for Nutter: The Northeast Times

The Northeast Times - a publication covering the vast, heavily populated northeast section of Philadelphia - has endorsed Mike Nutter for Mayor.

The paper calls Nutter "the best choice" and says that Nutter has "more to offer Philadelphia’s future than the other candidates, and he has no tangible negatives."

And further, "[w]ith 15 years’ experience representing a Council district that is as socioeconomically and racially diverse as Philadelphia as a whole, Mr. Nutter has a strong record of achievement, a strong sense of where and how to guide the city, and a firm grasp of the challenges that face the city."

To me, this is an impressive endorsement for Nutter.

Yeah, a bit surprised

Yeah, a bit surprised actually. Most people I have spoken to that were decided were between Knox and Brady ... of course overwhelmingly they didn't know who they were voting for.

The Northeast Times

The Northeast Times supporting Nutter is amazing. Seriously.

Conventional wisdom -- which I spout and quote -- suggested that Brady/Knox would divide most of the white vote and Evans/Fattah would divide the black vote, w/ Nutter coming in third in both communties.

That was wrong, b/c it suggested that voters would blindly vote race -- which many have in every other election -- over idealogy like cutting taxes and reform.

The Northeast Times is the biggest symbol of Nutter's ability to woo white Democrats. (And is a good sign of the strength of his campaign.)

Soon, expect an ad from Nutter -- don't know, just guessing as to what I would do -- listing each of these paper endorsements. I'd be willing to bet that the City Paper and Philadelphia Weekly go for Nutter. (Just a guess, no information.)

media endorsements

With all the talk about the growing irrelevance of print media nothing underscores the validity of that trend then these seemingly gratuitious endorsements that defy political reality. The disconnect between what the self promoting elites and ordinary Philadelphians deem important factors in a mayoral race is both alarming and revealing.

I'm pretty confused as to

I'm pretty confused as to what your point is. The papers and magazines that have endorsed Nutter have vastly different readerships and formats, and I don't know if your supposition of a monolithic, out-of-touch "media elite" - very Rush Limbaugh of you, by the way - really works in this case.

I don't think the widespread endorsements were a given from the beginning, either. I tend to believe the editorial boards when they say they really considered every candidate, and I think if Nutter's campaign hadn't gained so much momentum, we probably would see endorsements going to someone else.

The one point you DO have is that editorial endorsements seem to lean on style more than policies; a candidate who appears to know the issues well enough to talk about them in a complex and thoughtful way, who honestly engages opposing positions, etc., does have an upper hand. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. But it sometimes does come at the expense of a more policy-based discussion.
