Bill Green Endorsed by Rendell?.....Not So Fast

In a recent post on this Blog, Bill Green Proclaimed that he and Judge Darnell Jones were the only two candidates in this primary that would be endorsed by Gov. Rendell. Well, Gov. Rendell begs to differ as reported yesterday in Clout:

Rendell: Un-endorsement

Last week, Clout reported that Gov. Rendell had endorsed Bill Green, son of former Mayor William J. Green III, who's running for City Council at large.

We did this because Green thought it was an endorsement and because it sounded like an endorsement. (Example: "Bill will be a breath of fresh air on City Council. . . . Now, more than ever, Philadelphia needs bright, energetic, young leaders with the political will to do the right things for our city.")

Rendell says we got it wrong. It is not an endorsement.

"If a candidate who I know, including some of the incumbents, calls me and says, 'Is it all right if I put in my brochure that you said that I'm a good City Council person,' I will often say yes," Rendell explained.

He said he doesn't do "endorsements" in municipal elections because he was the former mayor, and it might have an "untoward effect. I just don't do it."

Rendell says he's getting bombarded by Council candidates asking why he had "endorsed" Green and "won't you endorse me." But, he says, " Bill Green worked in two of my campaigns and I've known him since he was a kid."

But even saying that Green "will be a breath of fresh air on City Council" doesn't make it an endorsement, Rendell explained, because "I don't say who I don't want to see on City Council. That's one of the nice things about at large."

Um, OK.

Rendell, "I don't say who I don't want to see on City Council"

That's right, he says who he does want to see on City Council. I believe I am one of those people and that is why he said I would be "a breath of fresh air on City Council." I proudly accept the Governor supporting my efforts to be on City Council by allowing me to use a quote and attach his name to my candidacy, even if he does not want to hurt the feelings of people he may have to work who are currently on City Council.

I recognize that many are not interested in facts, but for what it is worth.

1. To my knowledge, one other independent progressive or incumbent has a quote supporting him in the City Council At Large Race--Andy Toy. It is a historical statement about what a great staff person Andy was.

2. I met with the Governor on March 5 and asked him to help me. We crafted a quote together that I could use in my campaign.

3. The Daily News reported on April 6 that: "a Rendell spokesman, confirmed the endorsement and said Green and Jones would be the only two." Jones is an endorsed candidate for Supreme Court--tying us together said something. That article was published before I had a chance to comment.

4. I called the Governor's office to thank him on Friday April 6 and spoke to a staffer.

5. I spoke to the Governor on Monday April 9 and thanked him.

6. I spoke to the reporter who spoke to the Governor this past Friday. He told me the Governor stands by the quote.

Read between the lines, he has a state to run. I am still glad to be the only person endorsed by the Governor, even if briefly, and I am even more proud of what he has to say in support of my candidacy. Whether you agree with him or not on any one issue, we all know he loves this City and wants the very best for it.

Fresh air needs to blow into City Hall. Thank you Governor Rendell.

Whatever you say Bill....

and I suppose Tom Knox singlehandedly balanced the budget in 1992 for $1.
