Bill O'Reilly puts his finger on Philadelphia's real crime problem: lesbian gangs sporting pink pistols

Okay, so I'm generally uncomfortable with the whole blogging thing. The "blogosphere." And I sense that the only thing worse than blogging by just sitting around putting up blockquotes from New York Times or Inquirer articles....is sitting around putting up ridiculous Fox News clips to make fun of.

I can't help myself.

Bill O'Reilly opens this segment by referring to a nation-wide problem of armed lesbian gangs, attacking people and recruiting school-age kids to sexual lifestyles they don't want. He says there's one of these gangs right here in Philadelphia.

In Tennessee, authorities say a lesbian gang called GTO, Gays Taking Over, are involved in raping young girls.

And in Philadelphia, a lesbian gang called DTO, Dykes Taking Over, are allegedly terrorizing people, as well.

(Paging Lynn and Sylvester, when you get done accepting all those invitations to people's houses to confiscate their guns and any other illegal activities you stumble across, here's clearly an equally pressing issue to focus on. And it has the benefit of being sensationalistic enough to distract the local news for a few minutes from the hundreds of people already dead in this city this year.)

PS what do you think the credentials are for "Fox News crime analyst"?

haha yeah I saw that

In the words of a friend:

"Seriously how do I become a Fox News crime analyst? I'm at least as qualified as Rod007. In that I fully understand how to demonize gay people.

And my Phd program has taught me the half-assed research skills so valued at Fox News."

Haha! Does this guy have a

Haha!

Does this guy have a habit of portraying the gay community in negative light? Sorry, I typically dislike O'Reilly (sometimes he does make a valid point mixed in with his garble) and this is my first encounter seeing Rod007.

If I had to guess I'd guess

If I had to guess I'd guess our Rod007 is clueless and opportunistic more than he's maliciously homophobic.

Don't know how far that distinction matters though.

O'Reilly's an easy target, but after a 12-hour-each-way trip to Maine listening to that Al Franken book on tape, I have to say that Bill O'Reilly really does set himself up for anything he gets.

Jennifer

Pick a peck of pink pistols

Wasn't O'Reilly once sued for sexual harassment by a former employee stemming from problems with his own pink pistol?

Lesbian gangs

I know this sounds and looks stupid, but it's true. However, it's really old news. We had this problem back when I was in high school 12-13 years ago. I went to University City High School and we had problems with some members of the girl's basketball team sexually assaulting girl's in the bathroom. The school ended up locking the bathrooms and no one could go to the bathroom.

These lesbian gangs are real, but this news is so old. In my high school, we had muslim gangs too. Some students used to say they were muslim for the protection. It sounds crazy but it's true.

Yup

yeah, i remember a big Inquirer piece on it a year or three ago as well.

There's a funny moment where O'Reilly says something like "but this is a lower socio-economic phenomenon right?".

That's what dumb and funny and sad about this reporting -- O'Reilly and Inquirer. It's not just old news, it's old news dressed up in sensationalistic clothing but stripped of all the complicated context. Context like gang dynamics in these areas and communities and long long histories of violence against gay and lesbian youth, not least in schools, that in the past had typically been handled poorly (if at all) by school administrations.

look at his correction,

look at his correction, posted at his blog:

During the O’Reilly Factor segment on June 21st, while engaged in a discussion on Lesbian gangs, I inadvertently stated that gang members carry pistols that are painted pink and call themselves the “Pink Pistol Packing Group.” I was not referring to the gay rights group “Pink Pistols” who advocates for the lawful rights of gays to carry weapons for protection. Further, I mentioned that there are “over 150 of these gangs” in the greater Washington DC area. What I actually meant is that there are over 150 gangs in the Washington DC area, some of which are in fact lesbian gangs. Lastly, I mentioned in the segment that there is this “national epidemic” of lesbian gangs. A better choice of words would have been to say that there is a growing concern nationally, and especially in major urban areas, of increased gang activity, which includes some lesbian gang activity.

I apologize for any misunderstanding this may have caused.

Sincerely,
Rod Wheeler

It's classic! "I said LESBIAN gangs when I just meant gangs. I said EPIDEMIC OF LESBIAN GANGS when I just meant growing concern about gangs (some of which are lesbian). Give me a foxnewsing break.

"Correction" from a "journalist"

I got nothing to add there. Rod007's pretty much said it all.

Anyway a friend of mine reminded me, in another potential correction that somehow didn't find its way into that little mea culpa above, the image that opens the segment--a photo of a man with the caption "Lesbian Attack Victim"--is maybe a little more complicated.

The dude in the picture is Dwayne Buckle, who was "attacked" by a "lesbian gang" after he sexually harassed a woman in a group. After they told him they weren't interested, and were lesbians, he allegedly grabbed himself and offered to fxxk them straight. They insulted him back, he spit on them, and they fought him back--one of the group ultimately stabbing him with a knife.

The judge's sentencing in this case, which I believe and hope is being appealed, was sickeningly condescending and dismissive of the harassment and threat of physical and sexual danger women have deal with on the streets all the time. In concluding that the women's response was unjustified, the judge quoted a children's rhyme: "sticks and stones..."

Anyway, you can read about the incident and case in the New York newspapers as well as a full summary and analysis here.

The point, though, is that like CSI somehow segues from montage straight into montage, this news report manages to pile distortion on top of distortion. It'd be funny if it wasn't so sad.
