Help Save Philadelphia's History - The President's House

As many of know, there has been an amazing archeological dig at 6th and Market. This was the second White House which was built in 1790 - after NYC. What is so incredible is how well preserved the foundation of the old structure was found. The privys and the two wells have been a treasure trove of history. Perhaps the most astounding thing uncovered was the hidden passages which allowed Martha Custis Washington's slaves to move about unseen. George Washington's wealth came from his wife. It should be noted that Washington would return the slaves to Virginia before six months was up, otherwise under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the slaves would become free. The most famous of the slaves was the cook Hercules. The passage way is a clear indication that the Washingtons were embarrassed by the presence of their slaves.

Here's the problem: The contract for the dig calls for the hole to be refilled in July, so a Visitors Center can be built on the site. The juxtoposition of slavery and liberty makes this a site far too important a site to cover with dirt. Please contact your representitives from all levels of government and request that they all work together to find a way to preserve this fantastic find.

This site is being visited 50 to 1 over the Liberty Bell. I recommend that you take the time to visit the site personally. When you see folks (black and white) leaving the site, they're leaving with a heartfealt connection with this exciting piece of history. Also, there's a web site that shows the site 24 hrs a day on video.

Please help preserve this important historical place of Philadelphia's history.

Congratulations To Michael Nutter - the Democratic Mayoral Candidate

Congratulations to Democratic Mayoral Candidate, Michael Nutter. He won a tough campaign against a field of several well qualified candidates (and one not so qualified candidate). Michael Nutter had confidence that he would win, while most other folks figured he didn;t have a shot. It's a clear win for progressive pollitics. As many of you know, I supported one of the other well qualified candidates.

While I believe he will easily become our next Mayor, I would hope he moderates his position on Stop and Frisk.

Once again, congratulations to our next Mayor, Michael Nutter

Knox Aide, Michael Youngblood, Threatens Graduate Student.

Thursday's Daily News contained the following article "'Shark' pal, Knox aide square off".

Apparently Michael Youngblood made threatening comments and taunts to a graduate student. The student was following 'Tommy the Loanshark' character around with a bullhorn . The shark is currently anonomous, but he/she has been following the millionaire candidate around as a reminder that Tom Knox made a substantial amount of money (on the order of Millions) through pay day loans. Michael Youngblood, who's spent time in jail, is working for the Knox campaign.

I don't have a problem with ex-cons, but I do expect them to stay civil. The graduate student, Jim Nixon, says he's not part of any campaign.

Has the Knox' campaign gotten so low as to resort to thug tactics? For shame, for shame.

Tom Knox' Illusion Of Using His Own Money In His Mayoralty Bid

Tom Knox' claim that he is using his own money in his Marotalty bid appears to be an illusion. He is "loaning" his campaign Millions of dollars. A loan is a promise to pay the money back. If he were to win the primary, there would be a long line of special interests trying to contribute to his campaign. This is a no risk way to buy influence. Of course, the campaign would have to pay back these "loans" to Tom Knox. Doh!

This strikes me as pretty sleazy. Now if Mr. Knox were to lose the primary, the campaign might choose to default on the "loan" in which case Tom Knox would be able to claim a loss on his taxes. So we, the taxpayers, would help defray his costs. I'm assuming this is legal.

It seems to me that, if a millionaire wants the ability to use their unlimited funds on their campaigns, they should be prohibited from claiming the campaign losses on their taxes.

Why The Free Pass When Congressman Fattah Wants To Strike Down Campaign Finance Reform?

When Councilman Kenney tried to balance the Campaign Finance Reform to take into account the "Millionaires Exception", this blog gave it to Coucilman Kenney in the neck. Further their was tremendous boasting taking credit for beating back the Councilman's efforts.

Now when Congressman Fattah challanges the law itself, I don't hear one word about that challange. What am I missing?

On a related note, I've come to understand that Tom Knox is lending his campaign those many millions that have thus far been spent. What a deal! If he wins the primary he'll get donations which will go back to himself. If he loses it looks like he will get a tax deduction, which means the tax payer will help pay for his election run. If he wins, he will be getting massive donations. What will those donors be expecting in return for those donations? It's a pretty cute way of bypassing the Campaign Finance Reform.

I'm outraged I tell you! Outraged.

Why Can't I Reply To The "I think Abraham wants Brady to lose" Entry

I can reply to every other entry, but the "I think Abraham wants Brady to lose" entry.

What I was going to say was that that Bob Brady is happy that he received the endorsements of both Lynn Abraham and the Fraternal Order of Police. Bob knows that the police and courts are but a samall part of the concern over personal safety and securrity. Without quality education, decent housing and good jobs, the source of crime will surely continue.

Bob Brady is real, he cares and he offers hope!

The Latest Poll Is Out

The latest Poll is out:

Chaka Fattah 32%
Tom Knox 22%
Bob Brady 18%
Dwight Evans 10%
Michael Nutter 8%

It's too bad that the two Candidates I like the least are at the top. The good news, is they have the most room to fall. Dwight and Nutter have the nest chance to improve.
