Specter is a moderate?
Submitted by Louie Ackelsberg on Fri, 01/13/2006 - 7:13pm.Arlen Specter stated today that he was going to vote for Judge Samuel Alito, which would put Alito to the floor of the senate for confirmation. Specter is well known for his views on abortion, and knows the Alito confirmation could be the end of Roe v Wade. After the hearings, Specter was extremely quick to decide, which must mean that Alito proved to the committee that he would respect Roe. Maybe it was Alito’s comment in 1985 that assured our “moderate” senator:
Justice for Blain
Submitted by Louie Ackelsberg on Sun, 10/02/2005 - 10:11pm.I received the terrible news last week that an old friend of mine, Blain, had been shot and killed. Blain was 18 years old, lived in Mt. Airy, and graduated from Green Street friends after a year at Project Learn School, where we met. Over the past few years, I hadn't seen much of Blain, but heard he was heading in the right direction after losing his way for a while. I have been looking in the Inquirer and Daily News everyday to see if something has been written about him, and everyday I am more and more shocked when nothing is mentioned.
Since I am in school in Wisconsin and can't find anything about him in the newspaper, I have been talking to my friends back home, trying to figure out what is being done, and they seem to think that nobody cares. An 18 year old kid was shot in our city and didn't even make print. Yet when I read the paper they are still talking about a kidnapping in Aruba that happened months ago. Sadly, I suspect that if I or any of my other white friends were in the same situation, we would definitely have been covered by the local media. For a while, killings were all over the newspaper, but now they seem to be gone. Are less people dying, or is it just not trendy to write about murder anymore? Blain has loving family and friends, and they deserve to understand what is going on. How come no one cares?
