Building Democracy Ward by Ward, Division by Division
So the deed has now been done, our new Councilpeople have been annointed. Some of us from Philly for Change, Neighborhood Networks and others came together at Lucy's Hat Shop and said we won't tolerate this. But as we knew the City Committee would, they did their all in the family thing anyhow.
So what do we do now? We're just 8 months away from the primary election in which the machine will flex its muscles to get its choices ratified.
This is what Neighborhood Networks is doing. We're creating shadow ward organizations throughout the city to take on the machine on behalf of progressive candidates. We choose not to accept permanent rule by this thing that presumes to speak for all Democrats. We ourselves can build and be the organization that the Democratic City Committee ought to be.
NN is having its annual conference Saturday, September 30 at Temple University Law School. The theme is "Building Democracy from the Ground Up." We will have inspirational speakers like Chris Bowers and Anne Dicker to tell us what they're doing every day to build an inclusive politics. And then I hope we will all accept the personal challenge of doing some building ourselves. We'll have the chance to do that starting at 3PM when we break down into small groups organized by ward and division. There we will talk about taking responsibility in the neighborhoods in which we live to be the eyes and ears of the progressive movement. When we have enough of those -- along with boots on the ground that can go door to door on election day right behind the machine pols -- then we will have an answer to City Committee that it has to pay attention to. (And many good but frustrated committeepeople and ward leaders already in place will, I predict, be with us when we deliver that answer.)
And, btw, once we have this organization in place informally, we can make it official by getting waves of us elected committeepeople and ward leaders. We did some of that last Spring and we can do lots more next time. But the next opportunity to elect committeepeople isn't until 2010. In the meanwhile we can practice, practice, practice. And nominate lots of solid progressive Democrats along the way.
So if you're -- as they say -- sick and tired of being sick and tired -- join us on September 30, and meet your likeminded neighbors. Here's the link to our website which will let you register online. http://www.phillynn.org/

committee person vacancies
Stan,
Sounds like a great conference and I am sure many Phila NOW members will be there. I have added your post to www.philanow.blogspot.com
You are correct that the next opportunity to run for committee person will not be until 2010. However, there are a lot of vacancies around the city. Ward leaders can appoint people to vacant positions.
Although there are ward leaders who do not welcome new people, there are some (I hope) who would. It would be very helpful if NN or some other organization would publish a list of committeeperson vacancies and encourage young progressives to seek out the ward leaders and offer their services.
If it turns out that most ward leaders would rather have divisions uncovered than welcome new people into their ranks, then the general public needs to know this.

Old Philly Politics in the Hiz-ouse
Thanks for checking in from home guys. Remember to take your meds to stay regular. Can we not have a rule on YPP that if you every had an 8-track player, you should stop trying to enlist us young soldiers for your old wars? Admit it, you F@$&ed up this town. Now step back and let us try to fix it. We certainly can't do much worse than you did.
Can you feel me out there? Who's for a rule that says that YPP should be for people who are Y and not for people who wake up five times a night to PP?
That's The Spirit of 72
Ain't no way that you can count votes twice, but if you are part of the Tammany Hall gang, you can bend the rules, get to judges, and turn common sense on its ear. Think Bush stole the 2000 election? Then you know that Tony got done real bad.
Hay all you OPP (Old Philly Politics) types how come you are not standing with Tony?
You are ridiculous. How about
You are ridiculous. How about getting a clue?
Yes, let's have a fight over nothing.
Thanks for honoring me and my generation with this reply Iroqtherowhouse. Actually it was my generation that first figured out you couldn't trust anyone over 30. And see how successful we were with that strategy? You yourself have noticed that. Of course, maybe you have another cutoff in mind which better separates you "young soldiers" from the rest of us. When the military had a draft, the cutoff was 26. So if the rule becomes "soldiers" only should post to this list, then maybe 26 should be the dividing line.
Actually, to really rock the row house, you should form a party that's restricted to people age 26 and under. Then you can talk to people like yourself all the time, and not be distracted by even a single old and useless thought. No doubt you will gain total power almost immediately with such a party. Too bad you'll have to give it over almost as soon as you get it when you yourself pass the thresshold into the evil of 27.
But let's be serious. Resenting people, and assuming they're not on your side, because of age is just stupid. If that becomes your central organizing principle, then we are all doomed to endless generations of right wing rule. The right wing recognizes no such principle. If you're pro-greed, pro-war, homophobic and racist -- or maybe just 3 of the 4, you can be a full-fledged member of the right wing team. And that team is cleaning our clock. So please, don't emulate the stupidity of my own generation when it was young. Learn from that mistake. Help find ways that people who care about justice can unite, rather than bicker with each other about absolutely nothing.
And by all means, please come to our conference. There you will find people of all ages seriously contending with the real evils of our time, racism, homophobia, poverty, sexism, and, yes, ageism.
When I read iroqtherowhouse'
When I read iroqtherowhouse's post, my reaction was this is really funny; it reads like a parody of ageism. But it seems like he’s serious.
This kind of hostility to potential allies makes no sense, but nonetheless I think iroqtherowhouse has a point. In 2003, many older progressives bought into the crazy paranoia about the bug in Street’s office and rallied around Street. Also in 1999, progressives were divided with some supporting White, others supporting Evans or Fernandez. The consequence was Street won the nomination.
If I remember correctly, Evans and Fernandez got about 5% each and White got about 21%. If you add these votes together and factor in the synergistic effect of a united progressive force, White would have won hands down. (Disclosure: I was a volunteer for John White.)
Why am I bothering to bring up this ancient history? Because I am afraid history could repeat itself. In 2007 progressives no doubt will be divided and the beneficiary might be Bob Brady this time around. Eight years of Brady will be far worse than 8 years of Street.

Which planet did you say you're from iroqwhatever?
There's no reason to further respond to your bizarre rhetoric, hate-filled troller, and I'm finished doing so. Prattle on if you wish. I just want to renew my invitation to everyone who's serious about progressive change in Philly to come to the NN conference on September 30. Please do not be discouraged or diverted by one person's insistent ignorance from moving forward with our work.
I'll try to get the list for our meeting on Saturday
Sometimes its hard to get a list of committee people. But if I can find one by Saturday, I'll bring a list of open seats on Saturday.
Many ward leaders actually are interested in recruiting new, active people. And they rarely care about your ideology--although if the ward is often contested, they might care about what faction of teh party you associate with. Right now, they are not likely be scared if you say you're a progressive.
Some ward leaders or committee members recruite "associate committee persons" who don't have a vote at the ward meetings--when they actually do vote--but who are welcome to help the committee person canvass the division and work on Election Day. This is often a good way to get involved in the ward and eventually become a committee person.
Talkin' Bout My G-G-Generation
I guess you are right. Your own generation had plenty of stupidity.
The right wing is not what has been keeping Philly down for so long. I don't know when you last looked, but this is the bluest of blue cities. I thought "we" could do better, but it has been three generations of "us" who have been stealing, corrupting, and abusing power in this town.
So to reach back for another golden oldie you might recognize: Why don't you all f-fade away And don't try to d-dig what we all s-s-say.
I have no time for your do-as-I-say-not-as-I-did excuses, your pass-the-buck approach to responsibility, and your let's-you-and-him-fight attempt to avoid admitting that you guys screwed up for years.
The jokers you and yours elected and supported are the ones who beat this town into the ground and now that the city finally has some young blood ready to make change, you see fit to try to lead us back to the bad old days. This is the city that gave us some of the worst mayors in US history and has a revolving door in City Hall that leads to prison. I certainly didn't vote for any of those pin-striped or prison-striped Tammany Hallers!
You wanna put your money where your mouth is? Come out to Tony Payton's fundraiser next Monday night and support someone who is fighting the power and stop trying to hang on to the power you abused.
Political Math and "Progressive Numbers"
John Street got 35% of the Democratic Primary vote in 1999 - and Marty Weinberg got 31% of the vote. So, what you refer to as the "progessive vote" for mayor accounted for 33% of the vote going to three candidates (White,Fernandez, and Evans)- what about Queena Bass? :)
But if you follow your perspective, the question is - which progressive candidates need to drop out of the 2007 race in order for a "progressive" to win the mayor's seat?
Of course, from my own perspective - three "progressives" are currently leading in the polls - first, second, and third. One is leading by a wide margin.
Which Democrat do you think is leading in any Council At-Large polls? I'm sure it's a progressive, too. :)

Method and MADness
AH mention of the bug is like music to my ears. We stopped W. and his bug from turning the city GOP and that counts for something, right?
Brothers and sisters running the city? We have thieves and morons running the city. Milton's brother has opened the city tresury to his criminal padrones and Tammany Hall is gettin theirs in the wallet while we get ours you know where.
We have everyone who is Old Philly Politics boarding buses to Harrisburg to complain about crime, but nobody taking the walk to the roundhouse or City Hall to bitch or moan. Harrisburg ain't done nothing to us. Our gun laws suck but they ain't changed. The only thing that has changed is the number of bodies in the morgue. Other cities are cutting crime while we just add up the bodies.
So y'all want change? That means that they all gotta go. Throw the bums out? Throw everyone out - the bums - the thieves - the crooks. No more excuses. No more whining.
That's all it took?
I'm all about the love, baby. The City of Brotherly Love. Stan, I love you. I would sincerely love it if you would join with me and make real change. Everyone is either for the City of Brotherly Love or they are worthy of hate.
Is there an element of fact t
Is there an element of fact to your posts--or just pure rhetoric aimed at nothing?
Seriously, the level of assumption you make is astounding. For argument's sake, looking at your post, If YPP were to have a rule, instead of age-based preclusion, it should be regress based. Essentially, does this post do anything to move things closer to change. Why alienate anyone? That is not a wise political decision. Obviously you are less inclined to actually promote change than to promote ill-will.
If you are seriously promoting a Tony Payton Fundraiser, you should probably realize that many people on this site have and do support him. Some may even be there.
Who Organized Said Fundraiser????????????
Who set up this fundraiser you speak of iroqtherowhouse????????? I am not in favor of alienating anyone!!! The good news is that we are appealing and have a very compelling argument. A few facts 60 people in the 23rd Ward 19th Division came out to vote May 16th 2006 and I received 20 votes. The Judge ordered to count an additional 52 votes cast for committee person for State Rep. so that is a total of 72 votes to be counted for State Rep when only 60 people came out that day. Can anyone explain how this is possible??? Feel free to call me at 215-285-1520
