Dear City Council: Are You Looking to Lose?

Dear City Council:

Below, Gaetano talks about the same rumor I have heard: That City Council, in response to the self funding of Tom Knox, is about to repeal the campaign finance limits for the Mayor's race.

I know you guys weren't effected by the PA pay raise debacle. Are you looking for your own version of it? In a time when Philly is looking for clean politics, you are going to only return us back to square one?

Please be advised that 4 months before a primary election, in which every single one of you must compete, this is a bad idea, and will only serve to make it harder for you to keep your jobs.

All the best,

Dan

we must organize to defeat any council person who votes for this

If true, we must organize to defeat any council person who votes for this. We can’t go back.

Many of us have voting rights on organizations which endorse candidates, are committee people, and are members of labor unions which endorse. We should be able to ensure that those who vote for this pay a price.

The public may not yet be ready for public financing (we have a lot of work to do here), but there is substantial public support for contribution limits.

Karen--I just sent you an email in this regard. I agree.

How about we forget about this whole thing?

You know, the measure hasn't been introduced yet.

Those Council People who have created good will should really consider whether this is all worth squandering because Tom Knox posted high poll numbers.

So, you know, why don't you not introduce this, and we can pretend like we never even heard about it?

The Mayoral Candidates' Finance Reports - Due Today!

Guess what?

The finance reports filed today by mayoral candidates will show whether it is possible for them to raise significant money within the limits - and IT IS POSSIBLE!

And who else, other than a candidate without significant public service, would drop so much money on TV so early?

We can't limit personal spending on campaigns - but we can continue to empower the one person-one vote system.

It's about organizing - and message.

Councilman, Thank you for

Councilman,

Thank you for your comment and support. Hopefully, this egregious mistake in thinking will soon be far, far away from all of us so we can continue to live blissfully in YPP.

Seriously, I agree. It is possible, and we will see this happen.

I'm told Kenney has 9 votes for this bill

And that the mayor supports it, so unless someone changes their mind, it passes and gets signed.
I'm guessing from Councilman Goode's post that he opposes it and Nutter obviously opposes it. The 4 Republicans have no reason to support it. Looks like you YPPers (Yippers?) need to get 3 of the other 11 to vote "no."
The public hearing should be fun.

Looking for a GOODE clarification

Just looking for some clarification...

"And who else, other than a candidate without significant public service, would drop so much money on TV so early."

Without the advantage of facial expressions or tone of voice, it's hard to tell. What is the nature of this sentence? My sense is that you are taking a shot at Tom Knox, but I could be wrong. I deduce this from your use of the words "without significant public service" as opposed to something like "without name recognition."

I don't have much to add,

I don't have much to add, but I think repealing the law at this point would send a horrible message to Philadelphia voters. People are clearly fed up with the current system. Part of Tom Knox's appeal is precisely that he seems like the real outsider. I don't think that's necessarily true, but if council repeals the limits it will only reinforce that idea.

Call this Exhibit A for why term limits are needed

When one of the better individuals on Council proposes a stupid rule like this and thinks they can get away with it because they have a "popular" name that ensure them lots of votes, we need term limits.

God Forbid

You are all correct. God forbid the council removes a law that is going to be removed by the courts anyway in a few months... What would we do if millionaire Tom Knox didn't get his fair chance (maybe even right) to buy City Hall, outright? We need to FIGHT to make sure Knox can spend Billions if he has them... because that is true democracy in action. Who needs policy when you can get fancy ads? Heck, I might go get a payday loan and donate the money to Knox just to see him in action some more...
