Drinking Liberally, Mount Airy: 11/15
Do you value good drinks, good company, and good politics? Do you live in NW Philly or its suburbs? I'll be out of town, but I hope you consider coming out to DL Mt Airy this week to ensure that it goes forward!

Fellow Liberal Drinkers-
As I mentioned in a previous message, this week's DL is an important one. Specifically, if we don't get decent turnout for these next two meetings, I will have to fold the chapter.
We have two things which seem to make for an ideal setting for a chapter of Drinking Liberally: an educated + politically-involved community, + a welcoming venue. But we've had precious little turnout lately, and I can't keep the chapter going unless we have better attendance.
So, join us @ the Mermaid Inn, 7673 Germantown Ave., at 7:00 PM tomorrow night (Thurs., 11/15). As for subjects, we have tons of stuff going on in Washington, DC right now, all of which is good grist for discussion. To name a few...
* the new Attorney General seems to have no problem w/waterboarding as a form of torture. As for PA Senators, Sen. Casey voted against Mike Mukasey, while Snarlin' Arlen Specter continued his pattern of making good noises against a Bush pick but then voting in lockstep w/the rest of the GOP.
* SCHIP continues to be blocked by a President + Republicans in Congress who value tax cuts for billionaires + the Iraq war more than our kids.
* Blackwater keeps abusing Iraqi civilians + being rewarded w/fat contracts to do so.
C'mon, people! Let's keep Drinking Liberally, Mount Airy going!

A note on topics of discussion
On Phillyblog, a poster noted my focus on national issues- specifically GOP-bashing- in this week's list of suggested topics, + suggested that we discuss local issues as well.
Point taken. However, I have tried, as a rule, to focus DL: MA on local issues, as exemplified by our involvement w/the 8th District City Council race. Irv Ackelsberg, Jim Foster, Brian Rudnick, + the Rev. Jesse Brown have all attended various meetings of DL. And, at the very beginning of DL:MA, we had representatives from all 5 Democratic Mayoral candidates visit us to discuss issues.
Since the result of our local focus has apparently been the decline in involvement which I mentioned in the original announcement, I have decided to suggest more national issues. This is not to say that local issues are verboten; indeed, discussions at the Mermaid tend to be nothing if not wide-ranging. In recent weeks, we've discussed everything from national educational policy, to a neo-Hegelian interpretation of economic history, to traffic problems on Lincoln Dr.
So, please, if you want to discuss issues I didn't mention in this thread, please come up + raise them! I'm sure you'll find people eager to discuss them. Join us @ the Mermaid Inn, 7673 Germantown Ave., from 7:00 PM - whenever Joanne kicks us out, this + every Thursday evening.
Drink to Democracy!

how do you tell who the liberal drinkers are?
For newbies who aren't part of the "club"--how do they find you? Not sure how to invite people and spread the word. Do you have a sign or something?
Don't worry- we're easy to find
The Mermaid is pretty quiet until the live music starts @ 9:00, + I tend to ask any new faces I see whether or not they're looking for DL.
