Duda's a Dud and the rest gotta go!
I am appalled at the magnitude of people in this city who have no idea what a City Commissioner is or even worse, how most have never even heard of such an office. Yet, it is an office that is one of the highest paid offices in City Hall. Even more, it has been headed by Marge Tartaglione for over 40 Years! The question might be asked, is this because Marge is so great? Has her administration over that office been so wonderful, that she has been allowed to stay in that position, far longer than any Judge, Mayor, Governor, or any other State, City, or Federal office leaders have been in service to this city?? I heard Lewis Harris Jr. speak about this. He is running for City Commissioner over Voter Registrations for the Green Party and he has opened my eyes and has been an eye opener to many. He is exposing perhaps the greatest retirement program ever devised by the two party systems for rewarding one who has been loyal to a Political Party, but not one that they (the Party) may necessarily want in any other higher office. Or could it be what the two Parties really want is to maintain that certain people such as herself, Edgar Howard (soon to be replaced by Anthony Clark) and Joe Duda, stay in office so as to help ensure that things go the way the party wants them to go such as planned outcomes in certain races. Does this sound a little like Florida where votes were manipulated in such a sneaky way?
Lewis Harris jr. also talked about how the City Commissioner’s seat over Voter Registrations has had two people who have been in that Office collectively for 60 years. This question begs an answer, how in the hell is it that no body knows about this office, nor does anyone have any idea as to what they do and yet they have been doing it for 60 years? It is interesting that together the two of them have been in that office for 60 years (Marge and Joe) and nobody in the community knows them, or what they do. Also their office is the fifth highest position in our city’s government. Even more, that the City Commissioners office has no third Party (independent of the two major Parties) as a mandated presence within this office to help referee, check on, or balance the assumed impartiality of the Voter Registration office. Lewis Harris Jr. candidate for City Commissioner over Voter Registrations continues to explain more. He expressed that there are three elected City Commissioners over Voter Registrations positions, currently two Democrats, and one Republican. He asked why not one Democrat, one Republican and one Independent as a mandated seat; thus, safe guarding impartiality. He explains that to date, the two Political Parties have created all types of barriers to hinder and reduce the ability for a third Political Party to develop with any political strength what so ever, as well as to be able to participate on one of the three City Commissioner seats. Why is this? Would it not help to better ensure the so called impartiality mandated within the City Commissioner over Voter Registrations Office??. Commissioner who???? The Glamorous Jobs
I'm not surprised at all. There are thousands of people who don't any of these positions, and really don't care to ask about them. The most popular positions are the ones that circle around the papers (Mayor , Police Commissioner, D.A., City Council).
Do you know how many people really know who their Ward Leader is, or even knew there was even a position?
The Glamorous Jobs No One Knows About:
1)Inspector General
2)Deputy Mayor
3)Sheriff
4)City Controller
5)Clerk of Quarter Sessions
6)City Treasurer
7)Fire Commissioner
8)City Solicitor
9)Procurement Commissioner
10)Director of Housing

Glamorous?
Junior:
I don't know if I should thank you or not for listing my day job as the #1 most glamorous job no one knows about. I will agree that before I read that my predecessor was resigning after FOX 29 followed him with a helicopter for a month and showed that he lived in Jersey and not Philly, I had never heard of the job either.
I have tried very hard to give the office more visibility and to educate the public that we exist, and are here to protect them from a corrupt municipal government. I think my staff and I have transformed the office into a more pro-active organization that is respected and feared.
I invite all of you to visit our website www.phila.gov/oig - I hope you find it educational and a real resource regarding our City's attempt to shed the image of being corrupt and content. The public is not well served if they do not know that there is an agency dedicated to preventing and detecting corruption.
As for being glamorous, I don't know if I would go that far. We handle everything from city employees trying to sell government owned property, to inspectors shaking down restaurants, to companies trying to get illegal contracts and employees stealing time. However, it seems that I have only made enemies through our investigations, audits and sting operations. It appears that not everyone wants corruption, fraud and abuse detected, deterred or prevented!!!

I am sure
City Councilman Jim Kenney
311 For Philly
that he meant that YOU are glamorous.
Ohhhh - Then He is very WRONG
Councilman, thank you for the clarification. I went to public school (in Philly) so I appreciate a Prep man making it clear for me. If Junior meant that I am glamorous then I have to seriously doubt his judgment and opinions. I once thought he was reasoned and tempered...now I am not so sure. Because I haven't been even remotely glamorous since I had a full head of hair in the mid '80's!!!

And yet
Note that Mr Williams typed these posts from a Viennese cafe, overlooking a gothic bridge, cashmere scarf draped gracefully across his shoulders to shield against the early autumn chill, before his car service whisked him away to an early evening supper, followed by a night at the opera with the scions of the old Hapsburg nobility.
How are you going to keep a public school boy in a town like this after he's seen all that beauty?

Venetian Nobility
Tim...you are an excellent writer but I must correct you on one point, my Germanic duty was last month. I am currently in Vicenza, Italy which is approximately 40 miles West of Venice, on military orders with SETAF. The car service (gondola) whisked me away for an evening with the scions of Venetian nobility. That being said, I would like to quote W.C.Fields..."All things be considered, I would rather be in Philadelphia."

Ah! And how is the family Mocenigo?
It's so hard to keep up with your cosmopolitan lifestyle. Where do you find the time to blog?

I love all of you
so very much.
Thank you for clarification
Not to belittle anyone's position, but these are the jobs that most of the public don't know about. It's like you said only with the news pointing out corruption do most people find out these jobs. They're important jobs that help run this city but if you ask the public, they couldn't tell you one person who worked at that office. Should our people know more about their government, absolutely!
It's just funny around election time when its time to vote for some of these positions, no one can say one thing about the candidate. We see the posters and flyers, but who are these people really? And for you Mr. Williams, your job is the toughest. I would hate to have enemies like that, but someone has to do it.
