Elect Jesse Brown in the Eighth
Council should be improved next term with the addition of Maria Quinones Sanches, and Curtis Jones. But there's a chance to improve it still more, by electing Jesse Brown in the 8th Councilmanic District on Tuesday. Brown has been picking up steam in the last ten days, garnering the endorsements of both the Daily News and the Inquirer. In light of those endorsements, one of Brown's opponents, Jim Foster, has dropped out, calling on his backers to support Brown as the most viable candidate in the race against incumbent Donna Reed Miller. From the start Jesse has had the support of Irv Ackelsberg, YPP's endorsed candidate in last May's primary election.
Brown has opened an office in the last few days, and volunteers and resources are beginning to show up at a quickening pace. Hopefully YPPers will add to his list of new supporters by dropping into the office at 5549 Germantown Avenue, (just North of School House Lane) where a phone bank is ready to go. Or you can be in touch with the office to discuss other ways to help by calling 215-844-1103. Or last but not least, you can contribute to the campaign by going to Jesse's website at http://www.votejessebrown.com/donate.htm
It's important to support Jesse Brown not just because he's the most likely candidate to oust Miller, Council's least visible and effective member. Brown offers a meaningful, substantive difference from what any current member of Council talks about, the promotion of a new jobs program as a major priority. And he has a strong commitment to finding the money to put that program into place. He recognizes that without providing jobs for the desperate poor of our City, no amount of gun control, stopping and frisking, or any other police measure will bring peace to our streets.
Jesse is a realist with a plan. He recognizes that any program to hire thousands of unemployed people in our City will take a complete reorientation of the priorities of many other elected officials. And he knows that one of the main obstacles to moving forward in this City is the lack of coordination between elected officials at the different levels of government that represent us in Washington, Harrisburg and City Hall. So here's what he says about getting everyone on the same page:
So Jesse is committed to making things happen at and by all levels of government, and also to empowering all of his constituents to be part of the process. That would truly be something very different from business as usual. Please roll up your sleeves in the last two days -- especially if you can give a couple of hours at the polls on Tuesday -- to help elect Jesse, and to help transform City Hall.

Do we have polling data in the 8th?
Given the fact that two-thirds of Dems in the 8th voted for someone else in the primary, but that at least some of those are unlikely to cross party lines, how do Jesse Brown's chances look?
--Tim
His chances are good if . . .
His chances are good if we can just get the word out that he's on the ballot. And that's why we need everyone's help.
Remember, not only did Miller get one third of the vote, that vote only included Democrats. It's hard to believe she has even that level of support among the Independents and Republicans who can vote on Tuesday.
How do Jim's supporters know to vote for Jesse?
I haven't seen any posters or signs telling Jim Foster's supporters to vote for Jesse instead. Will the Rev. Brown have poll volunteers spreading the word on Tues.?

Foster's dropping out was in the Daily News
There hasn't been a lot of time or resources with which to spread the word that Foster's dropped out. But it was covered in the Daily News here (with apologies for not having mastered YPP's formatting system): http://www.philly.com/dailynews/local/20071101_One_Council_rival_drops_o...
In terms of getting the word out at the polls, that's the biggest challenge. Jesse will have a decent force of people at the polls, but he could definitely use more help. If anyone wants to volunteer for that, drop me a note with your contact information at shapsj@comcast.net, or call me at 215-247-9169.
As of right now the office phone is not working. I will post again when it is functioning.
A win by Jesse Brown in the
A win by Jesse Brown in the 8th would be perhaps the most most dramatic indication yet of the increasing clout of progressive politics of various stripes in the city. It would bring a new class of leadership to the 8th but it would also be a huge step forward in terms of the cause of transparency in government generally. Urge everyone you know in the 8th to vote for Jesse Brown on Nov. 6th.
And Brown can win . . . with help
He can win. But he also can lose. And pardon the cliche and the heavyhandedness of this, but it's up to all of us. The spirit is still alive and well out there on behalf of Nutter, but the race in the eighth is the one that's in doubt and where work and resources can actually matter.
So here are some things to do to make a difference: call the office, at 215-844-1103, ext 173, and ask to work at the polls tomorrow. Also, give money by going to Jesse's website at http://www.votejessebrown.com/donate.htm. And last, but not least, email everyone you know in the 8th to look for ballot position 626 in the sixth column and push that button first, tomorrow.
