Joyce Eubanks for Judge
Last May, we endorsed Joyce Eubanks for Judge, and said this:
You don’t spend 22 years at the Philly Defender's Office because you want to make it a ton of money. You do it, sacrificing all kinds of salary along the way, because you believe that everyone deserves a chance to have their story told. That, in a nutshell, is why we desperately need Joyce Eubanks in Municipal Court.
She certainly has the progressive credentials: Besides teaching at Temple for ten years, she is a longstanding member of one progressive organization after another- from the ACLU, to NOW, to the NAACP, to Philly’s own Neighborhood Networks, just to name a couple. When we earlier wrote our post on judges, I said we needed more judges in Municipal Court (where most poor people represent themselves) who understand that people who are not aware of their rights can not assert their rights. Joyce is that kind of person.
And, from those who have seen her up close (who, cough, cough, may want to chime in), Joyce is just a flat out good lawyer.
Despite losing the Dem primary, Joyce is still on the ballot, as a Republican. (Judges many times run as both; and, if there is one place that a party should not be involved...)
Anyway, tomorrow, I am voting for Joyce for Common Pleas Court, and I encourage you to do the same.

Can't vote for Joyce Eubanks this year Dan
Ok, I am biased...but who are you not going to vote for? Problem is that Joyce was filed to run for Common Pleas and Municipal Court in the Spring. She chose to take a political deal and drop down to Municipal Court to have the Democratic Endorsement...she lost to another African-American woman. She had cross filed as a GOP candidate for Common Pleas and chose to go that way for a different Court in the Fall. one trait a judge should possess is decisiveness. Two years ago, she also lost in the Democratic Primary even with the strong support of Carol Campbell and Bob Brady. I have seen her name on one ballot and that is one that only lists African American Women. I am sure she is a fine woman and will maybe on her third try will make a good judge, but not this year, and not as a Republican.
Vote for Joyce Eubanks for Common Pleas
Dan,
Thanks for reminding everyone that Joyce Eubanks is still on the ballot. She is a stellar candidate, endorsed by Phila NOW and Americans for Democratic Action.

I voted for her
and Ellen Green-Ceisler and Mike Erdos and one other. (It was a tough choice, which bodes incredibly well for Common Pleas--to have such a strong and exciting bunch of judicial candidates and likely judges. I hope the same happens in Municipal Court in coming elections, and we have no more such articles as Jill Porter's recent one or the Inquirer's judge-as-slumlord expose of this summer.)
