Manager of Outreach
The Center for Progressive Leadership Pennsylvania is seeking a full-time Outreach Manager who will lead the development and implementation of CPL’s outreach and collaborative work, as well as assist in the implementation of its state based political and partner training programs.
The Center for Progressive Leadership is a national political training institute that develops diverse leaders who can effectively advance progressive political and policy change.
Through long-term, comprehensive programs for organizational leaders, political professionals, activists and future candidates, CPL provides promising leaders with the skills, resources, and networks needed to become powerful progressive leaders.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position involves responsibility for the overall planning and co-ordination of all state-based outreach, from inception to completion aimed at meeting CPL’s overall mission, goals and objectives. Outreach and recruitment will be focused on communicating with a broad diversity of individuals, communities and organizations toward attracting high level applicants for our programs and developing strategic collaborations. The Outreach Manager will work closely with the Program Manager and State Director to implement CPL’s various statewide programs and trainings.
Outreach and Recruitment
1. Outreach and Recruitment Strategy
- Planning - Lead development of overall outreach plan for state office including:
- Targeted racial/ethnic communities, geographic regions, political communities, and work sectors for specific and prioritized outreach;
- Specific methods, timelines, and goals for program participant recruitment and network-building.
- Messaging - Develop an effective message to communicate to specific target communities;
- Evaluation and Assessment - Assess progress and evaluate success of reaching targeted communities and expanding CPL network;
- Strategy Development - Continually build upon and innovate outreach strategies being utilized in the state using experience, research, and assessment.
2. Organization and Political Landscape Research
- Database Management - Create, categorize, maintain, update, and grow database of potential affinity organizations across the state;
- Progressive Organization Analysis - Analyze the missions of organizations, relationships to each other, and roles within the progressive movement;
- List Building - Continuously identify new organizations to add to our database, communicate to, and partner with;
- Demographic and Political Landscape Research – Gather and share information about the political activity, leadership make-up, and demographic changes in key regional centers and statewide.
3. Organization and Individual Outreach
- Individual Outreach – Build relationships with individual leaders in targeted communities by introducing CPL and drawing out relevant information regarding political landscape;
- Organization Outreach – Build relationships with staff and leadership of targeted organizations by introducing CPL, drawing out relevant information regarding political landscape, and discussing future partnership possibilities;
- Assess partnership possibility (external) - Identify strategic or training needs of organization and the usefulness for CPL in partnering with an organization;
- Explore Partnerships (internal) - Propose potential partnership to State Director, lead exploration conversation with State Director and Program Manager, and work directly with Program Manager to effectively move from partnership exploration to partnership training design.
4. Outreach Tool Use and Development
- Material Management – Ensure that updated outreach materials are being used in all state communication with external leaders and organizations;
- Material Development – Lead development of new, updated outreach tools for CPL and its partners to reach organizations and community and political leaders.
Programmatic Activity
1. Program Development and Delivery
- News from the Field – Share input with Program Manager on the state’s political and training needs gathered through conversations, reading, and research;
- Outreach Lens – Personally ensure that every program the state runs has been developed based on what you consider to be the core needs of our target audiences and political needs of the state;
- Training – Take on specific facilitation roles at workshops;
- Lesson Plan Review – Read, analyze, and critique draft lesson plans during the curriculum development process;
- Trainer Recruitment – In conjunction with Program Manager, reach out to political experts and leaders about immediate and future trainings.
2. New Program Development
Under the direction of the State Director:
- Collect relevant information regarding the political landscape and leadership development needs of the state;
- Brainstorm new program ideas using information on the political landscape and programmatic models;
- Assess new program ideas using new program development criteria.
3. Alumni Program Development and Implementation
Under the direction of the State Director and in conjunction with the Program Manager:
- Develop a creative, engaging, concrete and evolving alumni program for existing and future alumni of all programs;
- Engage alumni in the development of and participation in any or all elements of an alumni program;
- Coordinate the elements of the alumni program including determining roles of staff, faculty, and alumni in leading a given piece of the program;
- Coordinate ongoing training and skills development for alumni;
- Compile and distributes resources around skills development, leadership development, policy issues, etc;
- Identify areas for Alumni to stay engaged in CPL programs as trainers, mentors, program partners, and participants.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two or more years of post-college professional experience. Demonstrated commitment to promoting progressive values and causes through long-term leadership development;
- Solid roots and connections in the progressive political community;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in diverse community settings;
- Specific experience working with people of color and/or bi-lingual communities;
- Deeply committed with a flexible schedule that can accommodate occasional weekend and evening work;
- Bilingual abilities, especially Spanish/ English, a plus;
- Familiarity with internet technology and applications to organization building is desirable;
- Specific work experience may be substituted for a college degree;
- Current driver’s license.
