Michael Nutter wants talented young people involved in city government
This should be of interest to young progressives:
Throughout the day, as he toured various city offices, Nutter was struck by the number of young people in places of authority, which is a real contrast to Philadelphia.
For instance, the first stop of the day was New York's vast 311 center, 311 being a 911-style telephone number through which local residents can obtain access to city services and all manner of basic information.
The tour was conducted most prominently by Elizabeth Leath, the system's analyst for community affairs. Leath is 25. She's been working on 311 for five years. She started as a college intern.
Nutter said that he wanted both a 311 system and a way to get talented young people involved in city government.

Thanks for Posting This!
I saw this blip and couldn't help but think of my own experiences with local government. I am sure many of you can identify.
I hoping that Nutter is able to have some impact on the harmful climate that has kept so many talented young professionals suppressed or altogether disinterested with a career in local government. I think his appreciation for the academic aspects of governing may be more exciting for people our age. Hopefully he's able to hire forward-thinking commissioners, directors, and managers to bring some fresh ideas and new hands into the work of Philadelphia city government.
City Council's Role.
The most important thing that the new city council can do starting January 2008, is to be a real partner with the Nutter Administration.
I can tell you first hand that the past few years have not been that cooperative partnership. I will not rehash the possible reasons, but am looking forward to city council being a legislative body that will be an enthusiastic vehicle to help Michael accomplish his agenda.
There are many difficult problems confronting us over the next two years and even longer. We are going to need all of our brain power and good will to move in a direction that we all desire.
The cultural change that I am looking forward to will be an important ingredient in our city's future success and the retention of all of our young and vibrant people talent that we so need.
Cannot wait to get started.
City Councilman Jim Kenney
