Patrick Meehan Resigning

AP news reports in advance of a press conference today. Seemed coincidentally timed given the trajectory of this thread last week.

So, I'm guessing Meehan's getting his resume back out to the private sector five months ahead of the ball? Given the perpetual snowballing DOJ findings produced by Congress these days, I'm assuming this slot will be filled by an "acting" someone from within the office staff. Generally, a departure like this doesn't mean anything, or shouldn't mean anything, for the political landscape. But, as we discussed in the earlier thread, US Attorney's offices over the past two Pres. terms have developed reputations as more political sinecures and politically-motivated operations than in the past. So, anyone out there want to put down the headline-spiked CasiNO Kool-Aid for a bit and handicap the impact of this?

The impact is Tom Knox faces serious competition

Not to say I told you so but . . .

U.S. Attorney Patrick Meehan announced today he is stepping down as the top federal prosecutor for the eastern part of Pennsylvania to position himself for a possible run for governor in 2010.

Meehan, a former aide to U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter (R., Pa.) and former Delaware County District Attorney, will hold a news conference this afternoon to formally announce his resignation.

"He has an ideal profile for that position (governor)," said Shanin Specter, a pre-eminent lawyer, Republican strategist and son of Specter. "Many prosecutors have advanced to important statewide office, both in Pennsylvania and elsewhere."

Question, who other than Knox is running on the D side?

Also I wonder if rumors are true, how a prosecution by Meehan's replacement of Knox's big supporter for mayor will play with Knox's gubernatorial ambitions?

I believe Lehigh County

I believe Lehigh County executive Sean Cunningham.

This guy?

Whats his political experience? Ideology?

Sorry

Ah

That makes more sense. Seems interesting. Knox is so stiff, I fear his chances against a seasoned prosecutor who can honestly talk a good "I fought corruption" game.

Dan Onorato, Chief Executive of Allegheny County

Dan Onorato, Chief Executive of Allegheny County is an early favorite for the Democrats for Governor in 2010.

Hmmm

Know nothing about the guy but the stuff that comes immediately in google from the Sierra Club not so good.

Might want to burnish those environmental credentials a little.

And good government ones as well.

Edit

OOOOOOPPPPSSS!

Not knowing Allegheny politics well who would have expected there to be two Democratic politicians from the same area one named Don Onorato and one named Dan Oronato.

Sorry for the mistake Dan Oronato sounds more promising than his similarly named counterpart.
Albeit with a "by the dram" tax issue vaguely reminiscent our very own Joe Vignola.

Thats ridiculously unlikely - like if Philadelphia were to produce another mayor called Ed Randall.

Wow. Exciting.

Another Loyal Bushie bites the dust. Color me impressed.

Or not,
-Z

"Bites the dust?"

He built a name for himself prosecuting actually corrupt Dems in Philly who ripped off our taxpayers and stole from things like our school district and adult literacy programs in the case Shamsun-din Ali as well as one actually very corrupt Republican of note in his native DelCo - a feat which will garner him respect and votes in Philly's surrounding counties and adoration by many in the "T" counties. It sounds like a smart guy whose work I very much respect but whose politics I disagree with pursuing political ambition.

As I said in the other thread "If we don't want our Dems to do the time, we shouldn't let them do the crimes." We got nobody to blame but ourselves for not replacing Meehan's targets t the ballot box before they delivered themselves to his prosecutorial prowess.

Let me be frank, I much prefer Meehan's Republican ambition being deferred and harnessed for what I personally believe to be good and necessary use here in Philly than being unleashed to wreak havoc on a Dem field that lacks similar "anti-corruption" bonafides.

Please...

Zorro, resigning (not under embarassing circumstances like other Bush DOJ fiascos) and being noted as a possible contender for the governor on a GOP ticket isn't "biting the dust." He's about as down for the count as the Casinos are packing their bags.

Besides, the thread was initiated to talk about possible political repercussions. I guess whatever color you do filter the world through doesn't really allow for nuance. Good luck with that. ;)

Sigh...

Hyperbole, anyone?

Polysyllabic, I know,
-Z

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

I'm not sure who or what you're speaking to, but since hyperbole is figurative speech, it needs a referent. Your "'nother one bites the dust," like your initial observation, wasn't really grounded in the reality of the situation under discussion. Nor do I see it really criticizing anything written by Sean or me. Sometimes even polysyllabic sophistry can only expect a "huh?"

Oy...

Perhaps I misused my 'bites the dust' comment. Nonetheless, I find it difficult to be particularly disappointed about yet another 'loyal Bushie' resigning as Bush's term of office expires.

Whatever,
-Z

Absolutely!

I could question whether an alt-journalist pegging one as a "loyal Bushie" makes one so, particularly as the eulogizing of the guy's work (and potential) is coming from the Specter not-exactly-loyal-Bushie machinery. I could express my amusement at the varied "another one bites dust" wannabe gallows crowds you find in the blogosphere as various appointees start working on their resumes, as if these resignations from public office ushers the resigner to some Star Trek / Marvel Comics contraption through which the resigner is beamed away to the Negative Zone, never to have impact or influence on worldly affairs again.

But I won't.

No, instead of acknowledging this resignation as possibly a strong GOP gubernatorial contender on the rise, relieving himself from his appointment to build political and financial capital for 2010, it's absolutely within your right to crank up the Queen or "Ding Dong the Bushie's Dead" or what have you. Party on. That guy's been _got_. High five, brah.

Actually

I was more surprised that you could straightforwardly quote Dick Sprague's exact choice of words - aka "Loyal Bushie" - without cringeing a little when thinking about their source, to be honest.

Its not like Sprague has not been known to creatively redefine "libel" and the truth at times. I was a big A.I. fan but still I was quite sure The Answer was in fact carrying a concealed weapon illegally when he went to visit "Mr. Poom-Poom Pants".

My kind of Dem

Our mayor

Mayor Nutter today learned from reporters after a City Hall press conference that U.S. Attorney Pat Meehan had announced his resignation. The mayor called the news "kind of stunning" and a loss for the city. While putting together his administration earlier this year, Nutter called on three former Meehan staffers to take appointed posts. A fourth former Meehan staffer helped sort out the mess that was the non-profit Safe and Sound.

"He has been a true presence, a force, but also a person with great credibility," Nutter said, adding that Meehan, "Helped to restore some sense of integrity and credibility to this city government. I appreciate all his work."

Ahem

From the DN

"He's not the person I'd want to be running against," said Larry Ceisler.

"He's a good candidate, he understands the political process, he has the resume and he's not going to come across as a right-wing ideologue," Ceisler said.

Meehan headed U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter's re-election campaign in 1992 and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum's 1994 upset Senate victory.

Specter said in a statement yesterday that Meehan had established himself as "one of the best" in a long line of distinguished U.S. attorneys here.

Another political analyst, G. Terry Madonna, of Franklin & Marshall College, in Lancaster, said that Meehan's Delaware County roots also make him a formidable candidate.

"If you want to win the governorship and you're a Republican, you have to stop the hemorrhaging of votes in the southeast," Madonna said. "You have to win the Philly 'burbs to be successful."

Ceisler speculated that one of the reasons that Meehan is resigning now and not at the end of the year - just as Fumo's corruption trial is expected to be winding down - is the sensitivity of his political antennae.

"He's leaving now because he didn't want to come off the Fumo trial and then announce for governor," Ceisler said. "He can take the high road and leave now and make a clean break."

Meehan was sworn in as U.S. attorney for the eastern district of Pennsylvania six days after the terrorist attacks on 9/11, and he is the second-longest-serving top federal prosecutor in the region.

Former colleagues said that one of Meehan's strengths was in not politicizing the U.S. Attorney's Office.

"His marching orders to the career people were to follow the facts wherever they lead, and he would back us up," said Mike Schwartz, who headed the office's public-corruption unit from 2002 until February, when he left for private practice.

And about that "acting" replacement, Laura Magid, the first woman US Attorney.
