Philly.com runs the stupidest 'analysis' known to man

I woke up today to find, like many of you, that Barack Obama had picked Joe Biden as his running mate. My general reaction is 'eh.' Biden consistently does the biddin' of MBNA and First USA, and was one of the main stooges pushing through the idiocy of the bankruptcy bill. But, he can be funny, and his 'noun, verb, 9/11' take down of Giuliani was classic, and will be needed again in a race against a campaign that says their guy can't remember the number of houses he owns because... he was a POW.

And, Biden is better than Evan Bayh or Tim Kaine. And, he sort of reminds me of a grandfather, a la what Tim said. So, OK, I will take him.

Anyway, I log on to Philly.com this morning, and one of the headlines right underneath the Biden story is a turd piece of 'analysis' by the ultimate hack of the Associated Press, Ron Fournier. Seriously, the article is high comedy.

Look at these 'balanced' stuff, which looks like it is straight from the McCain campaign:

Analysis: Biden pick shows lack of confidence

...In picking Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate, Barack Obama sought to shore up his weakness , inexperience in office and on foreign policy , rather than underscore his strength as a new-generation candidate defying political conventions.

.....

The picks say something profound about Obama: For all his self-confidence, the 47-year-old Illinois senator worried that he couldn't beat Republican John McCain without help from a seasoned politician willing to attack. The Biden selection is the next logistical step in an Obama campaign that has become more negative , a strategic decision that may be necessary but threatens to run counter to his image.

Profound about Obama, or profound about the author? Wait, there is more:

A senior Obama adviser, speaking on condition of anonymity, said his boss has expressed impatience with what he calls a "reverence" inside his campaign for his message of change and new politics. In other words, Obama is willing , even eager , to risk what got him this far if it gets him to the White House.

Good one, Ron! But, he does say something nice things about Biden!

Biden brings a lot to the table....

....So the question is whether Biden's depth counters Obama's inexperience , or highlights it?

It goes on from there, too.

Oh, on a totally unrelated note, John McCain offered Fournier a job, a fact that Fournier never disclosed. And, oh by the way, Fournier was found to have sent Karl Rove an email telling him to 'keep up the fight.' Oh, and by the way, Fournier blatantly repeats lies about Democrats, like that Al Gore invented the internet. Oh, and by the way, when he is not slobbering over McCain, he is calling Obama arrogant, and the Clintons utterly self-absorbed.

Dear Philly.Com, I see the hack piece is off of the front page. Please do us a favor, and never run this jackass' 'analysis' again.

MoveOn Starts a Campaign

I guess I wasn't the only one...

Damned if you do

Fournier's piece reminds me a little of the flap with Obama skipping the military hospital visit in Germany because the DoD warned him it would be perceived as a campaign event. The McCain campaign had one ad ready to go if Obama went anyways, and one (which they aired) after he didn't go.

I guarantee you Ron Fournier had a column ready to go to blast Obama if he didn't pick Biden, saying he wasn't confident enough to stand next to Biden, 'cause he would look inexperienced in comparison, that he wanted Bayh or Kaine or Sebelius to dominate, etc, etc.

The deterioration and politicization of our wire services is a disgrace and every major newspaper in the country needs to think much more seriously about what they print from the AP.

P.S.: I have a clip on my blog that shows Biden with a key east-coast power broker trying to turn the VP gig down. See it here.

Biden for VP

Am I excited about Biden? No, not really. I was kind of surprised when the text message hit my phone- at 3:00 Sat. AM.

The way I see it, Biden certainly helps to 'balance' Obama's perceived lack of experience, esp. re: foreign affairs. Re: Obama's lack of experience, though, I would note that he has more experience in elected office than 3 of the 4 Presidents on Mt. Rushmore. Also, perhaps the man who entered the Presidency w/the most experience in elected office was PA's own James Buchanan... and we know how that worked out. Biden could, potentially, help assuage the fears of people who are uneasy about the idea of voting for a black man- here's the Old White Man [tm] you wanted.

On the other hand, the most qualified potential VP was Bill Richardson. Let's look at his resume:

Governor of a state the Dems really want to win? Check. DE's solidly Democratic, and wouldn't bring many electoral votes even if Biden would swing it to the Democratic column.

International experience? Check- former UN ambassador.

Congressional experience? Check.

Cabinet-level official? Check.

Member of US' fastest-growing ethnic group? Check.

Biden... well, he's an Old White Man [tm], w/a good reputation on the world stage, which the US *desperately* needs after 8 years of Shrub's tender ministrations. And, unlike the past two Dem VP candidates, Biden has no problem fighting back when challenged. Both John Edwards + Joe Lieberman were practically polite to Darth Cheyney during debates, and didn't exactly defend their running mates during the spurious attacks on them.

In short, Biden as VP is nice; not *thrilling,* but nice.

The only really thrilling

The only really thrilling potential vice presidential candidate this election cycle was Barack Obama. Luckily for us, he's at the top of the ticket instead.

Nate Silver has a typically smart analysis of favorable/unfavorable ratings among various VP contenders with diff groups (Dems, Independents, Republicans, Obama Voters, etc.) showing that Biden was probably the smartest pick.
