"My Family Votes" - African American Women Make Voting Rights Count This Sunday

In case you have been lost in cloud for the last week, the deadline for voter registration in PA to participate in this years presidential election is Monday, Oct. 6.

Everyone who reads YPP, I'm quite sure has updated their registration long ago but what about friends, family, neighbors? Are they registered? Do they know where their polling place is? Do they know how to use an absentee ballot if they can't make it on election day?

Briefly, if you know anyone who would benefit from a small nudge to make sure they are prepared to participate in this historic election - even if you aren't sure - send them the following link to make sure they don't miss their chance to participate in this election. It will get them registered, help them find their polling place, get that absentee ballot. Its not annoying, its protecting their sacred voting rights. Do it.

On a related topic, I recently heard about a brilliant, innovative new grassroots GOTV program called "My Family Votes". Statistically, as you may or may not know, in the African-American community the bedrock group for voting (and some would say community organization generally) are women 45-61. If you want to reach out to the heart and soul of African American community, ladies in this demographic are who you need to be talking to.

As someone who falls out of that demographic in just about every way imaginable, at this point I'll quote an email about a unique targeted grassroots effort this Sunday to simply, effectively make sure likely Democratic voters turn out in record numbers this election.

If you are an African American woman (or some of your friends are) and excited about this election, this one short phonebank sounds like the single funnest, most effective thing you can do this year to effect social change and put Barack Obama in the White House. And its easy.

Hello My Fellow Female Voter,

No one can deny the influence African American Women have on our community and our city. However, there's a little known fact: African American women aged 45-61 turn out in larger and more consistent numbers than any other group in our community. However, some of us who vote all of the time live with others who are, shall we say, less than consistent.

The November 4th, My Family Votes! Initiative is a true grassroots effort inspired by Barack Obama's presidential run. This project's goal is to help the often overburdened mothers, daughters, aunts and caregivers empower their families through the ballot box for this and upcoming Philadelphia elections. We're calling our fellow female "Super Voters" and asking them to do ONE task—make sure everyone in their home comes out to vote. This method allows us to reach an average of 3-5 voters per call. Several hundred women have been called so far by volunteers who've each just given a few hours of her time.

Philadelphia voters need to turn out in record numbers. Basically if our family members do not go to the polls, Barack could lose Pennsylvania.

Join us this Sunday! Learn more about the program, and make some calls. (Trust us. It's truly addictive.)
