Vern Anastasio has almost 15 years of experience serving the people of the 1st Council District. Vern was a legislative aide and Chief of Staff in City Council and the PA House of Representatives. He worked with the police department investigating hate crimes, was regularly dispatched to the city's schools after acts of violence and worked with school district administrators to implement non-violent conflict resolution strategies. As the administrator for the city's Fair Housing Commission, Vern went after absentee slumlords. And as a staff attorney at the Redevelopment Authority, he authored the new rules that ended city council's pay-to-play practices with city-owned real estate. Vern founded the Bella Vista United Civic Association 11 years ago, was raised in small business on the 9th Street market and developed programs that eliminated blight, removed litter and encouraged economic growth in South Philadelphia. He’s also been a vocal advocate for tough ethics laws, property tax reform, responsible development and the comprehensive delivery of city services to all. Vern will now take this energy and spirit to City Council.
